The Sporting Estates of the Outer Hebrides Past & Present
The Sporting Estates of the Outer Hebrides Past & Present, an illustrated history by David S D Jones.
The sporting estates have been an integral part of the Outer Hebridean landscape since the mid Victorian period, contributing to the local economy through employment, the purchase of goods and services by sporting tenants and, in times past, the payment of high sporting rates to Ross-Shire and Inverness-Shire County councils by the various island proprietors. Remarkably, though, almost nothing has been recorded about the history of these properties which have provided dedicated shooting, fishing and deer stalking facilities for sportsmen for several generations.
The aim of this book is to provide an insight into history of the sporting estates on Lewis, Harris, the Uists and Barra, the principal islands in the Outer Hebrides, from the eighteen fifties until the present day, illustrated, where possible, with period photographs and documents.
